Project:
BURLINGTON NORTHERN SANTA FE RAILWAY FUELING FACILITY
Guernsey, Wyoming

Project Owner:
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway

Completion Date: 1998

This project replaced two existing fueling platforms, an oil-water separator, and evaporation lagoons in the Guernsey West Yard and added new facilities to the Guernsey East Yard. After replacement, the existing platform areas were demolished and environmentally reclaimed to provide space for extension of the four train storage tracks in the West Yard. The new Guernsey Fueling Facilities serve approximately 30 trains daily. The mainline platform is capable of handling up to a five-locomotive consists (eastbound) simultaneously, while the service platform handled up a four-locomotive consists (westbound) simultaneously.

The service platform is 329 feet long and located approximately 300 feet from the pumphouse. The mainline platform is located approximately 100-00 feet from the pumphouse and is 397 feet long. In addition, the service platform is capable of sanding locomotives using a dense phase sand transport system. Flexible 2”-hoses with aluminum wands are used to dispense sand into the locomotive sand boxes (front and rear). An overhead steel structure supports hose trolleys eliminating the need to precisely spot the locomotive consist.

The new, day tank farm includes a 100,000 gallon diesel fuel day tank, a 75,000 gallon unheated lube oil tank, a 2,000 gallon heated lube oil day tank, and a 30,000 gallon heated recovered oil tank. The entire tank farm has an earthen berm with containment liner. Lube oil and recovered oil piping is insulated and heat traced. Double contained pipe with leak detection is used for all oil piping underground throughout the facility from the transfer pumphouse to the day tank and from the main pumphouse to the two fueling platforms.
